Out of your described price range, but I think a .308 semi-auto purchase deserves more funding than a basic AR-15. Just sayin'.

One more thing. Assault rifles, by definition, are select-fire. There are no assault-type rifles. There are only sporting rifles or military rifles.
+1 on the POF 308. It's my dream rifle; will never let it go while I'm alive.

These usually run in the $2400 to $3000+ depending on what you have installed on the platform. Generally, with many pistols and rifles, you get what you pay for. There are exceptions, but a quality build or buy will cost you more. In this case, likely more than you've allowed for.

I love my .308. I tend to stick to bullets in the 150 grain range. Getting up into the high 170 and 185 grain range hurts my shoulder after a bit.

A 308 modern sporting rifle is a worthy aspiration. Best of luck.
