Bad news, once you start, you cannot stop! As soon as you get the bare lower, it is hard to keep it that way. First the lower parts kit then what upper shall I get!
Once you get the hang of it, you learn how to put the lower together without scratching it or leaving punch marks. Especially on the bolt release catch pin installation, the punch would always leave a mark. I switched from pushing the pin in from the right side and went to putting the receiver in a vise and pushing it through from the left, no mark, but you still have to be careful. Look at a factory AR and there are no marks. Go to a gun show where a guy has several AR's for sale and look at the bolt catch pin holes and even the trigger guard pin and look for a punch mark. If you see none, the guy who built it knows what he is doing. I was at a gun show last month in Amarillo and the guy told me to look at this AR he had put together the afternoon before. Sure enough, the bolt release catch pin hole had a punch mark. Didn't say nothing to him since my first three had em!
