Re: First aid kit questions
After reading this post it really got me thinking. I do carry a small medical kit in my car and house at all times but I really have little experience with emergency wound care. My brother is an EMT and he is going to give me the crash course on tourniquets and the like and set me up with a trauma kit. He said the same thing some of you guys said about duck tape and quick clot, great stuff. He also basically said the same as TAM. Tourniquets are used as a last resort when an artery is severed. He has been a fireman for more then 10 years and he said he has only used 1 tourniquet on a person in all that time. He said the person is usually dead before they get on location if a tourniquet is needed. This is why it is so important for people to know how and when to use them. He also said what TAM said, "direct pressure on the wound works well". This is what he recommended first. He said if a tourniquet is used you only have minutes before permanent nerve and muscle damage is done to your limb, or worst case scenario you lose a limb.
