Very true. In the HVAC business, an employees value is pretty easy to figure out. If a service technicians productivity justifies it, heck, I would pay him 200 dollars an hour. Because service techs, installers and even sales personal are easy to keep track of on an individual basis, there is no subjectivity in knowing what their value is other than attitude. A great attitude with zero production will put me in the poor house but typically the great attitude results in great production. Office personal are a different matter.

One thing you can be sure of, it makes it much easier for someone such as yourself who doesn't mind earning respect rather than demanding it to get ahead in life. I am amazed at the level of selfish, gets minze I witness from the 20-27 age range walking in my door acting like they deserve a job and top pay. Simply because they "need it" to pay their bills. In the old days, folks would come into a job interview and tell you what they have to offer as a benefit to the company. I am not kidding, the first words out of their mouths is often, how much do you pay or what kind of vacation time do you offer.

And how would you treat the person that is very good at what they do and is looking at other companies because his present employer will not pay him anywhere near what he/she is worth?

Because I am always interested to hear a new justification for having feelings of self entitlement, I would inquire as to why they feel they are underpaid. In the end, I wouldn't hire that person. I am looking for people who want to be part of our team, have something of value to contribute and have a vision of something more than making an extra fifty cents an hour. After thirty years of working with people of every imaginable mindset, there is no person I have less respect for than a quarter chaser. No loyalty.... These types typically over value themselves and are usually the same personality type that likes to "poison the well" when they are feeling the "poor whittle miss tweeted me" syndrome. I have no desire to buy into that mess and take on somebody else's trouble maker.

Now let's try that a different way.

A person walks into my office and tells me they are wanting to advance their career in the HVAC industry and the place they are working at does not offer this opportunity. It may be a person who wants to advance from install helper to lead. Maybe they want to advance from lead installer into service. I want this person. Obviously this person is wanting to make more money but the presentation was that they are wanting to make themselves more valuable to get more money. I would inquire as to why they feel the company they are working for does not offer advancement. That can go in many directions, depending on the response. One thing I cannot stomach is a person who feels entitled. I have great respect for a person who wants to improve their skill sets and make themselves more valuable.
