Re: The Incandescent Light Bulb R.I.P. ?
Blogs are also a method of SEO. Some of the blogs you read are in place to achieve better search results.WildBill wrote:Abraham wrote:This has got to be THE most riveting thread I've ever had the great good fortune to read, but for some reason, I keep falling asleep at the keyboard while reading it - must stay awake, eyelids growing heavy, head inclining to chest, I'm fighting it, fighting it zzzzzzzzzzzzI agree that forums are distinctly different from blogs. Of course, there are the "look at me" blogs. There are some look at me and "see how clever I am" blogs. Some blogs appear to me to be harmless rambling or maybe a personal diary that is published for all to see. Some blogs are closer to the annoying newsletters that some people send out at Christmas time.Abraham wrote:I posted this thread and hadn't come back until now.
NcongruNt states:"There are lots of blogs that do very little than spout drivel from some schmoe about whatever it is he thinks is important."
Salient point and the greatest common denominator in blogging. This is what I immediately think when someone cajoles us with - "read my blog". Some schmoe begging for attention for his dopey views and inexpert opinion on whatever.
Being importuned to "read my blog" also sounds pretentious, pompous and grating...and yes, there's a small percentage out there that perform a valuable service. From what I've seen of this type, the originator isn't waving a personal flag for ego satisfaction.
WildBill discussed blogs and forums.
I see forums as distinctly different from blogs.
Forums aren't owned by the posters. It's a meeting place for a lot of give and take. It's not for ego advantage.
When I see "read my blog" on a forum, I get annoyed at the presumption. The so called blogger is riding the coattails of a web site where his inveigling isn't really appropriate, but not so egregious that many will confront him.
Other blogs may be a creative outlet for those of us who like to write. Rather that keeping our thoughts in a bound book that resides in a desk drawer, we can put them on a blog. Maybe we will get some recognition or encouragement from some dear reader. Or maybe not.
I think that with most forums, the opportunity that some one will actually read your post and respond is much greater than having a blog. There is some "ego advantage" to discussing a topic in a forum. I have been know to express my opinions so people can see how clever I am.
There are no blogs that I read on a regular basis because most people don't have enough stuff to say that can keep my interest. Blogs and bloggers can be boring and pretentious, but it's like watching TV. You can always change the channel if you don't like what's on.

Yep... it is a real cliff hanger alright! A bit like discussing the weather with my mom.Abraham wrote:This has got to be THE most riveting thread I've ever had the great good fortune to read, but for some reason, I keep falling asleep at the keyboard while reading it - must stay awake, eyelids growing heavy, head inclining to chest, I'm fighting it, fighting it zzzzzzzzzzzz

LOL... I can imagine how that worked out. You are lucky you didn't grow hair on your palms.WildBill wrote:Very true! True. It reminds me of trying to something for nothing. You get 70W for the price of 20W [but the bulb costs more!]
I tried using some "grow" lights, thinking that would be closest to sunlight, but I didn't like it.

Re: The Incandescent Light Bulb R.I.P. ?
I agree but for now that is how they label and sell them. Lumens is on the package but the watts are featured center stage.WildBill wrote:It seems like it's time to start paying more attention to lumens, rather than watts.
Saying that a 75W bulb only uses 17 watts doesn't make sense.
I know how much light I expect to get from a 100W bulb in my lamp [enough to read a book], but don't have any idea how many lumens.

VMI77 wrote:..."Abraham"........ People will replace their incandescent bulbs when it makes sense to them to do so. I'm blown away by how many people today want the government to make decisions for them --or perhaps more accurately, want the government to make the decision for others when it's a decision they like for themselves.
I am with you 100%. Let the free market determine when people choose to replace their light bulbs. I would not want to speculate on the savings in light bulbs vs the savings in vehicles but I can tell you that it made a sizable difference in my electric bill when I changed to CFL. I have a couple rooms where turning a light switch on ignites a new generator at the power plant...LOL. My 75 watt bulbs are now using 13 watts but still providing the same amount of light as the incandescent bulbs. My kitchen alone has 9 of these bad boys. My 40 watt bulbs in my bathrooms are now using 6 watts each. My master bathroom has four 75"s and twelve 40's. It adds up. But... it is based on my decision. The government should not be legislating what kind of light bulbs I use any more than what kind of food I can eat.

Re: The Incandescent Light Bulb R.I.P. ?
I have replaced the majority of my bulbs with the compact fluorescent bulbs. Not because the government made me. It was to save money on my electric bill. This would be a free market concept. Would we eventually see most folks making a switch without government intervention? Probably. Many have already changed. It is weird at first(the light is not the same). I hardly notice it anymore.

Re: The Incandescent Light Bulb R.I.P. ?
Not true. Google replacement freon for R12 and you will discover there were many options. The drop in refrigerant was available within a few months of R12 being outlawed. Retrofit kits were/are inexpensive and were/are still available. Regardless, I agree with the spirit of your post.rotor wrote:......"Abraham".........There were never successful retrofits for R12 cars so if you wanted an air conditioned car in Texas you had to buy a new one...."Abraham"
