Re: Accidentally "exposed" My CHL - almost humorous

I got curious and decided to Google this idea. I found interesting info on it. What I found was that a lot of police and security "experts" will tell people to do this but in most cases it is pointless... LOL. The P.O. has been known to refuse credit cards that don't have a signature on them. An especially anal retentive employee did this to me a couple years back. The next day his boss told me he shouldn't have done that and would talk to him. From what I just read, he was technically correct. The advice I found for those that want to put see ID on your card is to sign it and put it on there.

Interesting stuff. I also found a page that said the merchants are not suppose to refuse to sell to you if you won't show ID. I can tell you that I have been to a couple places that will refuse the sale. Best Buy was one of them. The risk of someone getting your address was not on the list. The whole exercise of writing it on the card as being pointless was mentioned...LOL. I can believe this as I have been to many places where I just swiped the card.

Well heck... I think I am going to do both. Sign them and put check ID on the back. My AMEX has no place for a signature.... I am not sure what that is all about. I would like to get cards with my pic on them. Not all cards offer this. :cheers2:

The back of my credit cards all say, CHECK ID, in the signature area.
The back of my cards all have my signature on them...right in the box that says signature. You're not liable for charges you don't make, so the CC company gets to eat it. You call them up and report your stolen card and get a new one.

Letting every "Tom, Dick, and Harry" review (and potentially memorize) your identity documents facilitates identity theft. If you just present a signed card, all they have is your card #. If you want them to be able to open an account in your name, then by all means let them have your DL#/Address/etc.
Unless they have a photographic memory, I am safe. If they start writing the info down, we have a problem. It takes about three seconds to verify the name on my license. Not enough time for a person working across the counter at a store to memorize my ID. I am not wanted by the law, so I don't mind someone verifying my ID before charging up my credit cards. I usually encourage them and tell them how much I appreciate them making sure I am legitimate. I even tell them to keep up the good work. ;-)
