Tacomaoffroader, Sam come next time. Tacomaoffroader, PM replied.

O6nop, AR Traveler, RoundRock_Gun_Fan it was nice meeting you! If you'd like to try a low light shoot w/ flash light, we can get together in ARC sometime. It can also be a good way for you to check out ARC.

Those were some nice shooting you guys; I'll have to bring something easier to shoot than a PM9 next time to keep up w/ you guys :)

Weather was great; range got busy starting at about 11AM. We got to check out/try some interesting firearms. Eagle Peak turned out to be a good place for a social gathering; although the picnic table is a bit too close to the firing line IMO.

Thanks for letting me try the little Keltec., P229 .40S&W. The Keltec was much better than I expected; very accurate little thing. I had a good time guys. I'll upload the pic sometime tonight when I get home.

Does this apply to handguns as well? If so, then my shooting will be much reduced...
-NO- it does not.

FMJ handgun ammo is _OK_ there.

You can use your own targets at Eagle Peak or purchase targets there (I usually buy 5 of the 5-bullseye targets for $1 and bring my own reduced IPSC targets). Range fee includes 1 free target.

There's this drill that I learned that has helped me pick up a lot of speed in target acquisition by training me to snap my eyes. Eagle Peak may not allow us to implement it fully but if there's interest, I'll bring a shot timer for folks to try.

Basically, it goes like this:
Put 3 targets up with some space between them, then fire 1 shot each and repeat 3 times. Try to improve your 9-shot time.

I also do the watching front sight drill. This allows for quick follow up shots. (Eagle Peak has a 1 second/shot rule, so not sure how this would pan out w/ them since you can easily reach that limit w/ this drill.)

I can bring some scaled down IPSC and animal targets for us to shoot. Maybe more entertaining than the bulleyes I normally buy there.

Anyway, I hope to see you there. Don't make me drive 20+ miles and wait for them to open by myself. They might think I'm a gun nut or something :)

I've been fighting with NTB in round rock over a wheel they Damaged last Saturday. if I can get my car back on the road and it isn't raining I will be there.
If you need a ride, please feel free to ask me. Round Rock is in my way to Eagle Peak (I live in North Austin close to Pfluerville).

I hope things work out for you w/ NTB.

Re: What's everyone bringing?

O6nop wrote:Are we sticking to handguns? Anyone bringing a rifle or shotgun?
I can bring a Beretta CX4 carbine if there's any interest (.40S&W). If anyone wants to do some shotgunning, I can bring a Remington 1100, but that's best for Capitol Trap and Skeet.

Like people have mentioned, Eagle Peak won't allow FMJ ammo, so I've not offered any rifles. Otherwise, I have a Carbon-15 that you can try if you supply hollow/soft points.
O6nop wrote: My handguns are run-of-the-mill - Glock 19, Kimber Pro-carry 45ACP, SA GI 45ACP, S&W 686 .357 and a Taurus .38 snubby. If no one's tried any of these they're welcome to try them. Bring ammo.
All my guns are pretty common too. Nothing like those I see other folks posted here :)

I'm thinking abour bringing a Ciener .22LR conversion 1911 (since many here have 1911s), a scoped S&W M41 pistol (to let interested folks try out a scoped pistol), and a PM9.

If anybody likes to try any of the following, please let me know: HK P2000/Sig P229/Beretta M9/ all in DA/SA 9mm, and of course a Glock 19 :).

I can also bring my handloaded .45acp for my steel challenge gun for people to try. Just tell me if you'd want to try it and I'll load some.

I assumed that DFW has 1.2 million people and Austin has .5 million. So, 3 seems to have shown up in DFW... that gives 1.3 in Austin. I hope I'm wrong and we get more than that :)

Hopefully it'll become a regular meet.
If I use DFW's stats, I should probably expect 1.3 (3/1.2M*.5M) people for Austin's gathering :)

Let's beat that number guys!

If nobody objects to Eagle Peak's $10 ID card, then I think I will _NOT_ call them tomorrow. Anyone over 17 years old will have to buy a $10 ID card in addition to the range fee of $10/day. (Please PM me or something if you feel I should still call them and pursue the waiver.)

http://eaglepeakshootingrange.com/epsr.htm

You can read my review at

http://www.texasshooting.com/TexasCHL_F ... php?t=4214

Since that review I have been there numerous times and it seems like everybody who's been there has only good things to say about them. Additionally, Eagle Peak is probably the most economical place to shoot in Austin besides being one of the cleanest and most enjoyable.

If there aren't objections, I'd like to suggest Eagle Peak as a meeting place as many posters suggested. (Please post or PM me if you have objections.)

As for meeting time, how's this Saturday at 10AM - 12PM ? This allows us to meet up when they open, get folks who needs IDs out of the way, and pick the best lanes?

I'll call around and see if:
1. Eagle peak can waive the "lifetime ID card" for first time users w/o the card for this meeting.
2. Check Hill Country range to see what's up there.
3. If any other ARC members on board and intersted in this get together, please let me know, this will open ARC to us.

thanks!
1. Called Eagle Peak, but the owner wasn't there today (will be there tomorrow). Part of the lifetime ID card is going thru a safety lecture, and I mentioned that everybody has a CHL. I'm going to see if the owner will allow a mass safety lecture and let the folks w/o IDs shoot (and they can have the option to buy the ID after). So I'll call them back tomorrow. The cost is $10/shooter with any number of guns; no time limit.

2. Hill country Rifle Range is still open and I spoke w/ its owner. It doesn't have a set operating time but for this Saturday he plans to open 1P-6PM and Sunday 9A-6PM. The cost is $10/shooter and $2/additional gun; no time limit.

3. I've not heard from anyone yet regarding ARC membership.

Just a FYI: Red's indoor is $14/shooter with any number of guns; 1 hr time. They have a 100 yard indoor range and let us shoot anything except shotgun pellets. If there's interest in Red's, I can check if we can use their class room for weapons demo (I assume if we are going to try different guns, we should go over them first).

Unfortunately most of the guns I own are very common, so not sure which ones people may be interested in. Although there seems to be some interest in .22LR conversions. I can bring my Ciener 1911 kit for us to try. Everybody is welcome to shoot mine. If you own a government 1911, you are also welcome to test it on your pistol if you want. I can also bring a S&W model 41 and Kahr PM9 for those interested (I don't think these are available for rental at anywhere).

KaProw wrote:Howdy,

I might be up for that. sounds like fun..!

I live up the street from Red's North. We go there often. Was there yesterday around noon. some kind of class was qualifying and was using half the pistol bays. Indoor range get together would probably be more expensive since they charge by the hour. I'm guessing eagle peak would would probably be the best bet. I've been wanting to check it out anyway.

Laterz,
Rick
Hi Rick,

I also go to Red's often since I have a membership there. I agree that having it there might be expensive and in general I've not found indoor ranges to be good social ranges (something w/ the partitions or somthing).

The problem w/ Eagle Peak is that for first time users, it costs $20 because they require a $10 "lifetime member ID". I personally have one, but others may not. However, you are probably right that this may be the best bet for a successful gathering.

Another poster mentioned the Hill Country Rifle range, which may be a possible location. The only issue is that I need to verify it is open.

Also, I'm a member of the ARC, which allows me to bring 3 guests to the range. If there are other ARC members on this board who are going, we may very well be able to go there. This would be an ideal place to meet in terms of quality of range and affordability. Plus it brings in potential new members. The only draw back is that I (and other members) are responsible for my guests and we may just want to make sure guests have their CHLas a based check.

The Capitol Trap and Skeet range is a really nice range, with reasonable prices. They are limited by the city in regards to pricing and type of sports, which means shutguns only. This range is not going to work out for a first-time range.

I'll call around and see if:
1. Eagle peak can waive the "lifetime ID card" for first time users w/o the card for this meeting.
2. Check Hill Country range to see what's up there.
3. If any other ARC members on board and intersted in this get together, please let me know, this will open ARC to us.

thanks!
