As mentioned, the IDPA rulebook says you can compete in 1 match before joining IDPA. As also mentioned, some clubs are kinda soft on this rule.

As long as repeat non-IDPA shooters are not scored, it doesn't bother me that they come out and shoot. But if you shoot a few matches and plan to keep shooting the local IDPA match you really should pay the $40 and join up. And trust me, as long as you are a safe shooter and follow the Safety Officer's commands -you will enjoy it and want to keep shooting ;-)
