Mrs. Oldgringo was the Main Street Manager of Rusk until her retirement in 2004. She has hosted the train ride with past governors, judges and other state visitors on many occasions. That was back when the train was part of the state park system. Unlike the Cumbres and Toltec or the Durango and Silver City trains in Colorado, the Texas state train is not coal-fired.
Come on up, ride the train! There are a couple of places to stay on both ends of the line. Rusk has a KOA, a couple of Motels, fast food restaurants and a liquor store, thanks to former Main Street Manager, Mrs. Oldgringo! I do love her!

Re: Off The Beaten Path - Rusk, TX
Thanks for a neat article on our town. We moved to Rusk in 1994 to build the latest prison. We kinda' liked it here so we bought our house and will probably check out here.
The latest population numbers of some 5,000+ is a bit misleading in that those numbers include the residents of two (2) state prisons and one state hospital. I suspect the free population of Rusk is some 3,000 - 4,000?
