Maybe you could have "accidentally" opened your truck door just when the guy was running by you. "Oh, I'm sorry, I was talking to my kids when I opened my door and didn't see you there. Oops!"
Seriously, Excaliber gives great advice, as always. Police in a chase have too much to worry about without someone else injecting themselves in the situation.
