Otherwise, a good 1911 is always a nice addition to a collection . . . but it's been my observation that in your price range, the odds are higher that you'll get one with some sort of functioning problems. (I can hear the howls of indignation now . . . )
Both Kimber and Springfield among others offer models that fit within this price range that are very reliable. The Springfield Mil-spec and GI series are very reliable guns, and in my limited experience and opinion some of the best buys in a 1911 platform.
