Australian homicides are down from 351 victims in 1990 to 266 victims in 2006-7. What's interesting is the use of firearms in homicides has decreased from 29 to 11, but the use of knives has dramatically increased from 33 to 45.

The murder rate has decreased some, but it doesn't look like that can be attributed to the gun buyback program.
Meanwhile, violent crime has increased from 145,902 victims in 1996 to 215,208 in 2007. Every category except homicide is up; assault, sexual assault, robbery and kidnapping.
