Losing Cornyn with his seniority and power and getting a freshman Senator would be political suicide for all issues of importance to Texas. Everyone loves what Cruz is saying, me included, but talk is one thing and results are another. Until/unless a large number of other States elect Cruz-like Senators, then we will not see a significant change in Washington politics. Rand Paul was elected to the Senate in 2010 and he was the talk of the town -- for about 10 minutes. Since then there is no evidence that his conservative views are enjoying widespread public support. The 2014 elections will be a litmus test as to how well the Cruz message is selling throughout the country.

WASHINGTON — Sen. John Cornyn won the endorsement of the National Rifle Association today, a big coup given that his chief rival in the primary, Rep. Steve Stockman, is such an outspoken gun rights advocate.

With Cornyn's long history of supporting gun owners, I wouldn't describe this as pulling off a coup. Anyone who may consider supporting Stockman needs to look at his history. He's from Michigan and served as my U.S. Rep. for one term, until he was defeated by a pro-gun, liberal Democrat. (This was before redistricting twice.) His only claim to fame is that he defeated Jack Brooks when Brooks voted for the Clinton assault weapon ban. Brooks had served in Congress for over 40 years and had an A+ rating, until Clinton strong-armed him into casting a vote that brought his career to an end. Stockman lasted one 2-year term. How he got elected again is puzzling.
