BIT is a prerequisite to taking an NRA Instructor Course in any discipline. BIT is only good for a year, as a general rule, but a Training Counselor can give you more information. The BIT class teaches how to teach, it's not a firearms course.

Re: Looking for NRA's BIT course in/around houston area

I'm an NRA certified instructor, but not a Training Counselor. However, it's my understanding that BIT is not considered to be a separate course for which you receive a certificate of completion (as opposed to a certification in a specific shooting discipline.) You should take BIT in conjunction with an NRA Basic Instructor Course for specific shooting discipline.

The NRA courses don't have anything to do with being certified to teach the Texas CHL course. For that, you must take the DPS instructor course. If you are an NRA Instructor with teaching experience, then you can take a shorter course (28 v. 36 hrs), but BIT along won't do it. Even being NRA certified by itself isn't enough. You must have actual teaching experience. (At least at one time actual teaching experience was required. This may have changed.)
