I alternate between a stainless Colt Commander and one of my 5" guns. I think the Commander is an excellent length 1911 and there is no appreciable difference in accuracy. The 3/4" longer slide on the 5" guns makes a difference in muzzle flip, thus it makes a difference in follow up shots, but the difference is not very significant in IDPA shooting. In an actual combat situation, I believe most folks wouldn't find any perceptible difference.

There is very little difference in the weight of a Commander and a 5" gun, unless we are talking about a lightweight Commander.
