Re: Chat Room

Okay, we now have a chat room. I looked at the IRC option, but the language and personal attacks were rampant. That convinced me I wanted to use a mod to phpBB so only registered users could use the chat room.

This version is an RC (release candidate), not a gold version, so there may still be some bugs. One thing I don't like is the fact that posts in the chat room don't ever go away. I have to manually clear them from the database, or do delete them one by one. I suspect that will change in the gold version.

Please abide by the forum rules in the chat room. It's visible to everyone, but only registered user can post.

A suggestion was made to set up chat times and that's a good idea. Most chat rooms don't do well, even on active boards, but I think something regularly scheduled may help.

If you want to see only the chat room, you can click on the "chat" button in the upper right portion of your screen. It's next to the FAQ button in both prosilver and subsilver2 themes.

Let's see how this works folks.

Re: Chat Room

And I was thinking this was a simple, "the light's on or it's off" situation.

I'll find the mod for phpBB and let you experts tell me if it "safe" code or not. I like the fact that it utilizes the board's MySQL database, so only our members can use it. As for bandwidth, my business plan provides for 200GB monthly. That's far more than is used for TexasCHLforum and everything else I have on TexasShooting.com, but I have no idea how a chat room would impact the monthly bandwidth. Would the fact that I have Gzip enabled also help bandwidth usage on a chat mod?

Re: Chat Room

I'm not opposed to a chat room addition, but I need to research the phpbb website for an approved mod. If I find one I'll test it on another board I have. It has very little traffic.
