I think it’s because there is a fundamental difference between people who have been around guns most or all of their lives and who understand them as tools intended primarily for personal protection, versus those people for whom guns are a political talisman to be used for the projection of power, because they caught a noogie one too many times from a school bully. The latter have not thought far enough ahead to what would happen to them legally if they were to shoot and kill someone over a political disagreement during a street demonstration. Not even the mayor of Portland would be able to walk away from that one. Further, none of them have probably ever considered that, even if their weapon has no round in the chamber, there is no way for the other person to know that. Imagine what happens if one of them actually aims his AK, with a magazine in the gun but no round chambered, at a licensed concealed carrier. The reason why they did that is obvious. They or their bosses condone and support antifa and will do what they can to protect them. It is not reasonable. Maybe that is why you continue searching for an answer.
This is a BIG reason why, during all the long gun open carry demonstrations here in this state, I had far less issue with people who carried their weapons slung like these guys:

The first image does not imply a threat, the second one does. Imagine if that guy was Antifa and suddenly pointed his rifle at you (yeah, yeah, I know...it’s a pistol in the picture, but the principe still applies). Would you draw down and shoot him? I’d find it an unacceptable risk NOT to.
