Jusme wrote: Sat Apr 13, 2019 5:39 pm I realize I am necromancering, an old thread, but I have decided, to let my inner Toxic Masculinity/Duck Dynasty, freak flag fly.
I have let my beard grow for the last three months. I can't call it salt and pepper because it's more salt than pepper.
I have been trying different beard oils, balms, washes, etc..
I can't say that I have found a major difference in beard oils, aside from the different fragrances. Beard balms, however, are world's apart. Cheaper balms, are heavy with wax, which makes my beard feel heavy, and don't wash out easily. They are harder to emulsify, in my hands, and after a few hours cause my beard to stiffen up, and feel coarse. I won't endorse any one brand over another, simply, because my experience may be different than other's, but if you are new to the beard experience, don't waste your money, trying to save money, on balms. As far as washes, again, soap is soap, I haven't been able to distinguish, one over another, but like with all of these, I have a limited amount of time, and a limited number of products, that I have tried.

I'm not sure why I decided to keep my face away from sharp metal objects for so long, but I do like the results so far, and Mrs. Jusne has either decided, it's not worth arguing about, or that anything that disguises, my appearance is not a bad thing.
2 words: Moroccan Oil.

A little bit (like 2-3 drops in the palm of your hand, rub hands together, massage into beard) goes a long way. Smells nice without being overpowering. Leaves beard shiny, without feeling greasy in the least. I’ve tried several other products over the years, but Moroccan Oil has been the constant while the others come and go. I don’t bother buying anything else anymore.

I'll tell you what though.... if it will still grow in nice and thick in 4 weeks, you really owe it to yourself to grow it out at least once. After I grew mine out, teenagers starting jumping to open doors for me and treating me with great deference, dogs and cats seem to love me, little kids stare at me wide-eyed while ask them if they have been good little boys and girls, and make Santa jokes to their parents, who wink and go along with it. Young couples hang on my every word of marriage wisdom like I was Solomon himself. Beautiful young women suddenly started treating me like I am their sainted old Papaw. My grandkids love to play with it. Heck, after the first couple of weeks, it doesn't even itch anymore. There just isn't a down side.
There is one down side.
All the food that gets stuck in it.
Not at all. That's strategic measure to ensure uninterrupted nourishment during zombie apocalypse.
Exactly..... I'm just saving it for later.
Also the amount of mustache hair I have most likly consumed, but the left over food in it incress it's nutritional value
Bingo! And it's less socially unacceptable than eating your own boogers.

Skiprr wrote:TAM, where do you buy that Moroccan oil? Is it just straight Moroccan oil, or one of the specific beard products?
I buy it on Amazon, although you can probably find it in some pharmacies or a beauty supply place. It's not cheap ($48.95 for a 4.23 oz bottle), but you only use it a drop or two at a time, out of the pump dispenser that comes with the bottle. A little goes a long way, as the oil is quite viscuous. Rub it into your palms, then massage it into your beard. I believe that it actually contains frankincense and myrr, which probably accounts for the price. It smells nice, not too strong. Some people - pastors and such - use it as an anointing oil.

That or opting to see how it grows in and then choose to groom it in a style that suits the growth. For example, Reeves could probably pull off a trimmed goatee with mustache, but he's lacking some real estate for a full beard.

That is why I keep the sides of my face shaved when I'm not getting into Santa character, as my side whiskers are not nearly as well distributed as the rest, and it does look a little thin and patchy on the sides — although not quite Keanu Reeves patchy — which is only barely compensated for by letting it grow long on the sides. That's why I think it looks better the way I wear it the rest of the time. OTH, with my beard being as long as it is, it's not all that noticeable when I don't shave the sides, so I'm apt to only shave about once a week on the sides, even if it looks a little scruffy. I'm happily unemployed (retired), so nobody cares.

Re: Bearding

I don't put much by way of products on my beard any longer. I used to use a beard balm, but it made my beard feel stiff due to the waxes in it. These days, I pretty much limit it to a little Moroccan Oil every couple of days. The whiskers soak up the oil and it keeps them soft and luxuriant. And it smells nice. I have a pretty thick head of white hair too, and I even use a couple of drops of Moroccan Oil on it if I'm trying to get spiffed up for some occasion or other. As with my beard, it absorbs in and keeps my hair manageable, without feeling oily.

Growing a good beard merely requires patience, as I'm not one of those guys who has to shave twice a day to keep the shadow off. I'm otherwise not a very hairy person, and my beard took its time growing in. But I've had some kind of facial hair most of my adult life. I've had a mustache and some form of beard as long as I've known my wife, which is 30 years now. I started growing long like it is now almost 4 years ago. I'll probably keep it this way the rest of my life. I like it, my wife likes it, and it just kind of suits my personality.
