A Short Barrel Shotgun is a shotgun with a barrel shorter than 18 inches. A Short Barrel Rifle is a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches.

I knew that SBRs are NFA regulated, I know the minimum barrel length for rifles and shotguns to avoid requiring a tax stamp, but I just didn't know that SBSs were obtainable at all, even with a tax stamp. Other than things like divers' bang-sticks for shark defense, it simply never occurred to me that anyone would want a shotgun with a barrel of less than 18".

I understand the attraction of SBRs, and I wouldn't mind having one myself (although, as NFA items go, I am personally more interested in suppressors than SBRs). I guess I just don't get SBSs. Not trying to be critical, and hey....if that's what floats your boat, then rock on; but it just seems to me that other than conceal-ability there isn't any practical advantage to an SBS. Even SBRs begin to suffer significant loss of performance both in terms of terminal ballistics as well as accuracy as the barrel gets shorter and shorter. I guess in extreme CQB situations, short-barreled weapons can have some advantages.....spec-ops door-kickers use them, so obviously they think there is an advantage or they wouldn't use them.....but conversely, tens of thousands of marines and soldiers engaged in CQB very effectively in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past 13 years using standard issue M4 carbines. So from my perspective.....and this is just MY opinion.....the primary justification for SBRs/SBSs is concealment...........followed by the fun factor.

Help me out....what am I missing?
