I actually wrote to Gov. Christie about this case, when he commuted Aitken's sentence. I asked why he had commuted it instead of pardoning him, exactly because commutation leaves his conviction intact and pardon expunges it. I got a letter back a few weeks later. . . . I have it around here somewhere. . . .in which Christie gave a totally unsatisfactory answer, stating that he thought he did the just thing.

At the time, Christie was just becoming a rising young star in national republican politics. That letter convinced me that I would never, under ANY circumstances, vote for the running dog.
