Did you or somebody get a general range reference with a rangefinder, or was 800 a "guesstimate"? I ask because the first time I visually estimated 800 yards on something, I was testing my estimating ability against a laser rangefinder (Leica 1200). My 800 estimate turned out to be 531 yards lased. Honestly, I'm not trying to call you out. I was just curious because you said you weren't exactly ranging them, but then came up with "past 800 yards", and I was just wondering how you figured the distance.
We weren't ranging each dog, they were too small. But we did range larger objects in the shooting field such as barns and trees to use as a reference. One of the fields had some old junk cars that ranged out to be about 780 yards from our shooting position, and we hit a few dogs that were on the other side of the cars.
Ah! Thanks for the explanation. If found that my estimates are only more or less reliable out to about 300 yards. Beyond that, I gotta either use my reticle or my Leica.

Shot and should have hit *mutters about the evils of 2nd plane scope and large zoom variances* 400yds. Memorizing drop charts for 10x means diddly when the scope is set to 25x. Shot fall is t even within view at that range/mag on my .45-70. Right at 5 mils low x .3 mil right at 10x though ;) give or take a wind variance. Silly rainbow trajectory. Can't wait to finish my 6.8spc AR and take it instead.
My son's boss was shooting an AR10 in .260 Remington at 800. His dope chart goes out to 1,300 yards. The AR10 my son was shooting was in .308.

Re: Your Longest Shot

My son just went shooting on a private 800 yard range yesterday with his boss. He was 20/20 on a 12" round steel plate at the 800 yard line with an accurized AR10 with a 10X scope, shooting the rifle owner's handloads of unknown specs. That was his longest shot to date.

Roger that. . . . .and I'm not even sure whether it would fall under the term "accurate". . . . but my longest shot with iron sights is also 200 yards, with an M1A, and the target was a 10" square hanging steel plate. I was able to consistently hit the plate on every shot once I got the range figured out, but I have no idea if I was hitting it dead center or not. At 200 yards, the National Match .062" military front sight post pretty much obscured the steel plate. That plate was dancing around like it had been struck by Thor's hammer. My last shot finally tore the plate clean off the chain. I went downrange and fixed it, and then I left, pretty convinced that I would never want someone trying to tag me with a .308.

I just don't have the eyes anymore to shoot iron sights at anything over about 100 yards.

Re: Your Longest Shot

750 yards at the Angeles Shooting Range in Little Tujunga Canyon, California. The rifles were a Remington 700 Tactical topped with a Leupold 3-10x tactical scope; and a Ruger M77 All Weather topped with a cheap Bushnell scope; both in .308 Winchester. The cartridge was Federal Gold Match 168 grain SMKs. The target was a steel silhouette of a deer.

The Remington scored consistent hits after taking 2-3 rounds to get on target. The ruger took a half dozen to get on target, and then scored 2-3 hits out of any 5. Pretty dramatic difference.

Don't know if I could do that today.
