Re: Urgent: XDs recall...
What happened with the first set of "upgrades"? Were the pistols malfunctioning, or just not working as well as you had hoped? Did you post details earlier that I missed?LTUME1978 wrote:After a second trip back to the factory (where they replaced a lot of the parts they installed in the first "recall" trip), then lots of dry and live firing, the trigger pull on my 2 XDs are down to around 6 1/2 pounds. Still a long trigger pull on them. The sights were off a good bit on both of them. I was able to move the rear sight on one and got it sighted in. Need to work on the other one next. Those rear sights are really installed with a lot of interference fit, don't think they will fall out. I will keep them for the time being but am really liking the Shield I bought while these were at the factory last fall.

Re: Urgent: XDs recall...
The Hornady isn't catalogued as +P. It comes by the higher velocity in short barrels by virtue of lighter weight. I don't think of it as a magic pill or anything, I just have greater confidence in the bullet performing as designed if the velocity is up to snuff. A 230 grain bullet going 750-800 fps out of a short barrel is still going to hurt someone badly, and penetrate relatively deeply, but the bullet may not have enough velocity to fully deform........or maybe it will.....that's the problem, not being confident that it will. A bullet going 900 fps likely will perform.......at least that's what I keep telling myself.Excaliber wrote:I deliberately fed mine a mix of every type of carry round I had in my bag of "retired" carry rounds (those I changed out because they'd been in the magazine more than 1 year) and it ate everything with aplomb and was not punishing with any of them, including the +P's.The Annoyed Man wrote:I had mine to the range last Monday, and it was fine. The trigger might have been just a little stiffer, but not so much that I really noticed it. By the way, I found a good carry round for it: Hornady 185 grain Critical Defense. Per Hornady, it gets 900 fps and 333 ft lb at the muzzle out of a 3" barrel. It feels like it has a fair amount more "pop" than a 230 grain FMJ, but it isn't painful or anything. Plus, the shape of the nose practically guarantees it will never misfeed.
I like the Critical Defense rounds, but didn't have any of those to try yesterday. I agree that the bullet shape which is more conical than rounded should feed in even balky guns, but I can't say I've verified that with testing. Fortunately the XDS isn't a fussy eater.
I stopped looking for the "perfect bullet" quite awhile back. Any premium hollowpoint (Hornady XTP, Speer Gold Dot, Critcal Defense, etc.) will do what I need done as long as I do my part. If I don't, there's no magic bullet that will make up for my failure to perform.
I generally prefer the standard velocity rounds because I can shoot those more accurately and quickly than the +P's in a little gun, and I think that outweighs the small compromise in velocity.

Re: Urgent: XDs recall...
I can't imagine why the recoil characteristics would have changed. It's the same caliber. It's the same recoil mechanism. It's the same barrel length. Have you shot any other .45s while it was out for repair?hpcatx wrote:Follow-up range report from my last post...
I did notice some sponginess the first few magazines. I think somewhere between seventy-five and a hundred rounds down range that started to smooth out some, although I definitely notice the break more than before the repair. All in all the trigger is probably something with which I can live.
What concerns me is the change in perceived recoil. Rather than pushing back on my hand, I feel like there's now more muzzle flip. Maybe it's just in my head, but I'd swear it feels different. Does anyone else have this same experience? That was one of the things I liked most about the XDS when I first got it... for only a 3.3 in barrel, there seemed to be little muzzle flip.
BTW, I haven't had mine to the range yet since I got it back the other day, but I have dry fired it a bunch, and it doesn't seem much different from what I had before.

Re: Urgent: XDs recall...
Mine is finally enroute on the way back to me. It says Fedex 2nd day, and it shipped yesterday, so tomorrow would be "2nd Day"; but the tracking# says "weekday delivery", so I'm expecting to see it on Monday.

Re: Urgent: XDs recall...
I can tell you that the 9mm XDS weighs more than the .45. The reason is the difference in the weights of two barrels of equal OD, but one with a 9mm bore and the other with a .45 bore.jmra wrote:Wow, I don't know what to say. Thanks. It looks like I may be picking up a G19 in a trade Thursday (for a rifle that was living in the back of the safe). A lot bigger than the XDs but it will work.RogueUSMC wrote:I am debating on buying a friend's 9mm XDS this week...if I do, you are welcome to hold it while yours is gone. It hasn't had the recall performed yet but it can wait until yours gets back. You are just down the road from me looks like. I have my XDS .45 back already.
If you do get it, I would love to hear your take on the difference between the two especially related to recoil and follow up shots. I have toyed with the idea of trading my .45 for a 9mm if there is a significant difference in follow up shot placement.
Again, thank you for the offer and Merry Christmas.
Would be nice to see how many members are close and get together for coffee one Saturday.

Re: Urgent: XDs recall...
Mine will be returned to me "after the holidays." I'm OK with that. It's the tradeoff for waiting until I knew for sure that there would be a fix, and what the nature of the fix is, before sending the pistol in.

From the article:RogueUSMC wrote:Cocked and locked would be a single action trigger pull...if your single action trigger pull on a double action pistol is heavier than ANY striker fired pistol, you need serious work on your trigger. 7 lb 6.5 oz is probably lighter than most double action triggers.

Springfield Armory XD-S Recall – Update & Review of Upgraded Guns
by GUNSAMERICA ACTUAL on OCTOBER 20, 2013
As to Denny’s claim that the XD-S shoots better, I agree. The groups you see here in the pictures were the best examples I took from over 200 rounds in each gun. Most of my shooting was with range rounds, mostly milsurp and Speer Lawman. Both my rested and offhand groups were smaller with the upgraded guns. They weren’t drastically different, especially offhand, but as a whole the upgraded groups were smaller, with much fewer flier shots. The targets I picked for the pictures were shot with Hornady Critical Defense, which has always been my best performer in the XD-S.
When you get your gun back, don’t be surprised if you don’t feel that the trigger pull is heavier than when the gun left, even though it technically will be. I had to put my digital trigger gauge on the upgraded guns, because side by side I felt that the difference wasn’t something you would notice. The gauge measured slightly over ½ a pound difference. So far I have blind tested five people to dry fire both the orignal and upgraded guns, and none so far have been able to tell any difference in the pull.
As a side note, because so many discussion board “experts” skip over this. a heavier trigger pull isn’t the worst thing when talking about striker fired guns. Everyone’s biggest complaint on striker guns is that the trigger is too light, when compared to a double action/single action semi-automatic or a double action revolver. Some worry that a light trigger results in accidental discharges, though in practice they are infrequent. The XD-S upgrade only adds about a ½ a pound of trigger pull to the gun, and I think the trigger is a little smoother. The upgrade also does not effect the reset length, which is just over 1/10th of an inch on the XD-S. Side by side, besides the trigger pull, the only physical difference I could ascertain was that the grip safety seems to allow the trigger to fire a little bit earlier.

Upgraded gun on the right; non-upgraded gun on the left. Gun on the right shoots better.

Re: Urgent: XDs recall...
The CSR sent me a new email with label links and the same RMA# while I had her on the phone. I printed out the labels then and there. The link for printing the labels is only good for 5 days, but the labels themselves once printed are good for 30 days. I didn't get the gun out yesterday like I had intended. Doing it this afternoon.stash wrote:Tam - what did they say about new shipping lablels? Mine also expired.

Re: Urgent: XDs recall...
I didn't talk to them about timeline or the fix. I talked to them about printing new shipping labels. The ones I have previously printed had expired. I'm going by what others say about the timeline, and I'm comfortable with it taking 6-8 weeks.......which seems to be the going rate.Excaliber wrote:Please share what they said about how long they expect to keep your gun.The Annoyed Man wrote:I had held off on sending mine in until now because I wanted to see what the fix would be and how long they would be likely to keep my gun.
