A video to show your non-gun owning friends

In this video, narrated by a long time police chief, two shooters demonstrate the effect of magazine changes on the time it takes to shoot a given number of rounds. One of the shooters is a very experienced male shooter, the other a somewhat experienced female shooter. The demonstration is divided into a pistol segment and a rifle segment. Both segments are aimed rapid fire at a series of paper targets.

In the pistol segment, each shooter first fires two 15 round magazines, then three 10 round magazines, then six 5 round magazines, all for time. In the rifle segment, each shooter fires one 20 round magazine, then two 10 round magazines, also fired for time.

What is predictable is that the more experienced shooter was a litte bit faster both at shooting and at magazine changes than the less experienced shooter was. What was surprising was that A) the difference in elapsed time for each segment was closer that you would have expected between the two shooters; and B) the elapsed time differential between the one larger capacity magazine and the multiple smaller magazine reloads was irrelevant. In at least one case, having to swap magazines actually resulted in a faster total elapsed time than shooting the single larger magazine.

In the last segment, a "bad guy" was positioned "in hiding" behind a barrel 25 ft off to the side of each shooter. The shooter fires one magazine until the slide locks back, at which point the "bad guy" charges toward the shooter, attempting to get to the shooter before the magazine swap can be completed and a followup shot fired. In the case of the more experienced shooter, the "bad guy" made it about 1/3 of the distance between them before the shooter had completed the swap and fired another round. In the case of the less experienced shooter, the "bad guy" made it about 1/2 the distance before the follow up shot was fired.

The point of the exercise, as the video explains, is to prove that reducing magazine capacity has little or not real effect on slowing down how many rounds even an inexperienced shooter can send down range in a very short amount of time, magazine changes included. The charging "bad guy's" inability to even get close to the shooter during a magazine swap demonstrated the fallacy of gun grabber arguments that smaller magazines would give a good-guy a chance to tackle a bad-guy shooter during magazine swaps. (And the obvious logical fallacy of their argument is that if it would make it easier for a good guy to tackle a bad guy during a magazine swap, that would ALSO make it more difficult for a good guy to defend him/herself, thereby decreasing their safety.)

Anyway, I thought you all might find this video interesting as an educational tool when trying to convince someone of the false arguments on the gun-grabber side of the debate.
