I remember that story when it was still happening and the bus hadn't been found yet. I'd forgotten about it since until this reminded me. I'm not sure that 35 years is enough. Anyone dangerous enough to do that once is dangerous enough to do it again. We're not talking about a more or less spontaneous kidnapping and assault of one child. We're talking about a planned AND CARRIED OUT kidnapping of THIRTY FIVE children. He deserves to die in prison because he was prepared to let 35 children whom he buried alive die in an underground tomb. To heck with him. Let him die in prison.
