For me, it's just because I moved here in April of 2006 from California, and then we were busy house-hunting/buying, getting my family moved out here, getting my inlaws moved out here, etc., etc., and I just didn't get around to taking my class until December of 2007. I got my 2nd plastic in hand on 11/23/12. It had actually expired on my birthday, 10/05, due to my own procrastination at getting my paperwork mailed in, but I had a valid Utah CFP exactly for that possibility; so I never had to stop carrying during that month and half before I got my new plastic.03Lightningrocks wrote:By the way... I am getting a kick out of seeing all the folks who originally joined the forum about the same time frame as me getting renewals at the same time. I wonder what the connection is?

Re: Renewal timeline...
For me, it took about 2 months PLUS the time wasted when they had to mail the CHL-100 form back to me for signature.chichiriviche wrote:Renewals only require the training form signed by the instructor, completed renewal form and of course pay the fee. Fingerprints and photos are not required since they should be able to use what they have in file. As to how long it will take, They received my documents back on 11/05 and still does not show in the web site when I try to check the status. Wrote two e-mails and still waiting for answers. Does anyone have an idea how long is taking in average for a renewal?

Re: Renewal timeline...
I have a Utah CFP which doesn't expire until June 22, 2014. I deliberately timed acquiring it so that there would be a lot of overlap between its expiration and my CHL expiration.WildBill wrote:Finally! Did you have a Utah backup? FINALLY! License received in today's mail, 8 days after the website said "Mailed."The Annoyed Man wrote:Just an update.... the DPS website noted that the background check showed as completed on Monday night, and it shows today that my license has "mailed." I'm assuming that I'll have it in hand in the next week or so. What a PIA, but I have only myself to blame. Y'all can bet that I'll pursue it more assiduously the next renewal than I did for this one. So to recap for anyone else who is about to have their first renewal:
This is a very good model for how NOT to proceed with a CHL renewal. I offer it up for all y'alls instruction and edification.
- Took renewal class late May/early June 2012 with Crossfire Training.
- Waited until mid-September to mail in paperwork, and lost my CHL-100 somewhere along the way.
- September 15, rush back to Crossfire and obtain a new printout of CHL-100, and send in with other stuff to DPS by registered mail that same day.
- October 5, my CHL expires. (Thank goodness for Utah CFP.)
- October 5, receive letter from DPS telling me to sign the stupid CHL-100 and send it back to them.
- October 5, sent signed CHL-100 back to DPS via registered mail.
- November 11, background check completed.
- November 15, license mailed.....40 days after it expired....

Re: Renewal timeline...
So I'm an idiot.....
I took my renewal class back in May or June from Crossfire-Training, and then the paperwork sat around while I tended to other things. By mid September, when I finally remembered to get it done, I had lost my CHL-100. Panicked, I called Crossfire. She told me to meet Marty over at Cabela's the next day and he'd print me out one. So I went and got it, put it together with the printout from the DPS website, and mailed it off by registered mail on about 9/15.
Since my CHL expired today, my birthday, I checked the DPS website early this afternoon and saw that everything had been received, and my background check was under review.
Then, a little later, The Annoyed Woman came back in from the mailbox with an envelope from DPS.......OH GOODIE!!! Was my plastic in there?
No. It wasn't. What was in there was a photocopy of my CHL-100 and a cover letter telling me to SIGN the stupid CHL-100 and return it to DPS as soon as possible.
Thank God I have a Utah CFP.

Renewal timeline...
Hi Guys,
My first CHL expiration date will arrive on October 5 of this year—my 60th birthday. What is a reasonable timeline these days from start to finish, and how long before the actual expiration should I count on taking a renewal class and initiating that process? Also, I can't remember.....my current license was obtained before the electronic fingerprints were required, so DPS haS a card on file for me, but not a "digital card." Am I required to submit an electronic fingerprint set with my renewal, or is the card already on file sufficient?
Thanks.
Crossfire in particular.....HELP!!! (.....since I'll be calling you for this when the time comes....)
