So do I. I also like DPC, of which I'm a member, although DPC don't like .308 bolt rifles. . . .tfrazier wrote:I like Elm Fork.

Re: Never going to QUAIL CREEK again!
I've been meaning to check out Tac Pro some time, but it is far enough away that it would never be my primary range. I'm always a little bemused about the paucity of really good rifle ranges with distances out past 100 yards in the DFW area. When I lived in Pasadena, California, I had an 800 yard range 20 minutes from my house (and about 30 minutes from downtown Los Angeles), and a 1,000 range about 45 minutes from my house (a hour from downtown Los Angeles) . . . . . . in Pasadena, fer cryin' out loud. But here in Texas, where being a gun owner is so common as to not draw a second glance from anybody, quality long range rifle ranges are hard to come by.

Re: Never going to QUAIL CREEK again!
toxin440, welcome to the board. Your experience sounds even worse than mine was, but given the way I was treated, I'm not surprised at how you were treated. I've had pretty good luck at Elm Fork in Dallas, and Alpine just south of Ft. Worth. If you AK has a scope on it, you can get on paper at 50 yards at Elm Fork and then move over to 100 yards. I like that range a lot. Without a scope, you can zero at 35 yards in the tactical bay. I don't know much about 7.62x39 ballistics, but with an AR in .223/5.56, that will give you a battlefield zero of 35 and 350 yards. Alpine is OK for rifles too, but for me (in Grapevine), it's just a bit too far away to bother with most times.

Re: Never going to QUAIL CREEK again!
Good people don't act like jerks just because they have no local competition. If I wanted to be treated like that, I'd join the Marines and get mouthy with my DI in boot camp. Lo and behold, I am a civilian, and I can vote with my wallet. Elm Fork is a much nicer facility, and it is staffed by knowledgeable, professional, and friendly ROs. As it turns out, they are closer to me too; so now that they are back up and running again, I don't have to put up with jerks if I want to shoot my rifles.TexasBuck wrote:They are good people with no competition.

Re: Never going to QUAIL CREEK again!
Bass Pro is just fine. I live in Grapevine, and it was my primary range until I joined DPC.

Re: Never going to QUAIL CREEK again!
Well I've only ever seen two ROs there, and both of them were a rude pain.

Re: Never going to QUAIL CREEK again!
A whole other aspect of this is that in their attempts at being safety nazis, I believe they actually make things less safe. It seems like their range officers escalate every normal interaction into a confrontation, and it is mainly due to the reasonableness of their customers that these confrontations do not escalate into something worse. What happens on the day they confront a customer who is as foul tempered and ill-mannered as they are... ...and who has a loaded gun in his hand? It's not just the RO or the customer who could get hurt. There are other people there too, and those range officers need to learn how to de-escalate a situation, not how to charge it with even more anger.

FWIW, it is just west, off of I-35W, at the TX-1171 exit, the next exit north of TX-114, due north of the Texas Motor Speedway.JRG wrote:Where is Quail Creek? Not that I really need to know since I'm definitely not stopping there.

Re: Never going to QUAIL CREEK again!
Pucker, there's at least a couple of threads at THR, and possibly other forums that they should get the links for also.

Re: Never going to QUAIL CREEK again!
Those guys at Quail Creek are jerks. I have had issues with them myself, and I've never been anything but cooperative and respectful with them, even when they were breathing fire down my neck. I have always been careful and safety conscious at ranges, and have always tried to scrupulously follow all their rules. I've shot at a number of ranges, both here and in California, and I have never had anyone be as overtly rude and pigheaded as the range officers at Quail Creek. If you do a search of the 'Net for complaints about Quail Creek, you'll find them everywhere. Some of them are mine.
Personally, the last time I was there was the last straw. I'm not paying someone to be rude to me. And worse yet, they do it to you in front of your kids. I'm never going back there again.
