It doesn't state whether or not the impersonators were uniformed or had parked a fake squad car out front - if so, that would give anyone pause.

If not, consider:
The intruders allegedly broke into a home where Daniels was staying after Daniels refused to answer the door.
Forced entry, no squad car or uniforms to provide identification = justified immediate defensive gunfire from resident as soon as they cross the threshold.

That things turned out the way they did for the resident after allowing himself to be tied up is pure luck.
