I love the XD9 which I carry with the standard clip. I have the sub-compact which sits really well for me when carrying. My big thing as it seems to be the case with most XD owners is the grip safety. Its just an additional feature which provides me with some extra psychological security. I find the grip more comfortable than with the Glock but that might have something to do with the size of my hands though.

I recommend the XD9 as a great carry weapon. In response to TX Rancher about the holster I've found the perfect one in the Minotaur MTAC from Comp-Tac. Its extremely comfortable and can wear it against skin without any discomfort.
