Is just nonsense, your situational awareness should always be on high alert, I've had one occurance where somebody made me nervous enough to put my palm on the butt of the gun! Over all most people do not notice or they don't care! So as my friend Excaliber says CARRY ON!
Exactly! I don't OC because of how I normally dress, with untucked shirts (yeah, not the neatest appearance, but habits are hard to break), but I do carry OWB. However, I always ask those who say something like "open carrying will make you a target" to post even one good example of a news story for me about an open carrier who was shot FIRST, or who was specifically targeted, because of OCing. Most realize that the vast majority of the news media is NOT a friend to the armed citizen. I am sure they would just LOVE to put up a news story about a "gun toting extremist" being shot while OCing. Yet, I don't see ANY stories like that. If it were prevalent, someone should be able to find a few of those stories to back up their theories about OCing, but no one ever replies with any, no matter how many times I've asked. Even if they had provided one or two stories, though, that still would not be statistically significant.
Excellent response k.Mooneyham. I have never had anyone find one either. I am sure it may have happened once upon a time but noone has been able to show me one. I am a retired Instructer and just before OC passed, It was evident it was going to pass one of the reporters at Lufkin Daily interviewed me after he did Sherriff Sanchez. This is one of the mythical fears that was prevelent at the time. He ask me about it.
My response was: You sir have to be good at internet search. If you are not you cant do your job. I challenged him to find one. His response was and I do quote, "I tried. I couldn't find one." OC is a deterrent to everything except truely Dedicated Crime.

I am open carrying tonight just so I know what it's like, but I'm not sure when it would be useful in everyday life?
Also, I kept this out of the open carry forum because I want both sides on this one.
Open Carry all the time. If it is not posted 30.07 I open carry. Couple of exceptions.
1. We ask at church that all weapons be concealed.
2. If I am somewhere that is not posted but I know they would probably frown on it then I put the vest on. Example: my doctor. And changing Dr is not an option. Barely found him. No one else wants our insurance.
I live in Angelina County, Deep East Texas. My son and family live in Round Rock. Only bout 3 miles from Travis county line. I still OC there. Never an eye bobble or problem there either.

You will get several that say they conceal so they have a tactical advantage of surprise. :banghead:
Surprise has never been considered a defensive strategy. If you have to SURPRISE someone they already have you covered w/ a deadly weapon. :fire
Surprise is offensive. Surprise the enemy in ambush. Surprise them with first assault. Surprise is offensive.
Open Carry is a deterrent to any crime of opportunity.
I am a retired Instructor. Before Open Carry I taught and still do that any evident means of self defense is a deterrent to crime. I never had any LEO to disagree with that. Why anyone wants to hide their evident means of personal defense so after a gun or knife is pointed at you and ordered to "gimme your keys and wallet" then you can SURPRISE them with your gun and shoot them is beyond my reasoning. :banghead: :banghead:
You will still get those who wills say All of the above may be true but they still want the element of surprise for defense. Again beyond my reasoning. Just say I am not really comfortable w/ OC.
Had my say one more time I wont argue it w/ anyone.
