Yep. The same or effectively the same time. But we've got, like, 18 different steps within the succession chain--four or five of which might not be eligible under the current succession act unless their cabinet position had been approved by the senate. We have so many levels defined because catastrophic events could happen. From a meteor crashing into the planet to, I dunno, a super-deadly global pandemic or something. Just the thought of possibly having Pelosi, Schumer, and Blinken in there at all makes my skin itch.RottenApple wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 1:56 pmI don't think that's really how it works.Rafe wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 12:04 pmYeah; that's the sad reality. Not just the political posturing part. But to think that after January 20 the order of Presidential succession will be, if Joe is incapacitated: 1) Kamala Harris; 2) Nancy Pelosi; 3) a to-be-selected Senate president pro tem (and I wouldn't bet against Schumer with Harris sitting as tiebreaker); 4) Antony Blinken; and then, 5) Janet Yellen.
It is my understanding that if Joe is out (illness, death, 25th'd, impeached, etc.), then Kamala becomes President, nominates a new VP (who has to get approved by both houses of Congress). Pelosi stays right where she is. The only way Pelosi (or any Speaker of the House) becomes President is if something happens to both POTUS and VPOTUS at the same time.

Yeah; that's the sad reality. Not just the political posturing part. Love him or not, I'll be praying for Joe Biden's health and mental alacrity for the next four years. Because the poker hand we've been dealt as the line of succession looks pretty bleak. You absolutely know that when the Dems hammered on Trump for years, trying to find any way in the world to get him out office, all the while they were thinking, "Hey; the worst that could happen is Pence." Frankly, our best hope on that front is if we can get anybody-but-Schumer in that number three spot. Well, and turn the tide in the House in 2022...
