And it wasn't because they wanted to prevent gun violence in towns, most towns had their own ordinances ranging from turning the sidearm into the local constabulary (Like that word?) to handing them over to the proprietor when entering a saloon, restaurant or dance hall. The ban on sidearms in particular came with reconstruction and was rampant in states of the former CSA. It was a matter of control of the "rebellious" states.
