Just yesterday my wife showed me something that was sent home with my 14 month old daughter from daycare/school that was from the American Academy of Pediatrics. It is "The Injury Prevention Program" and the thing starts off on page 1 as the very first safety key point with the following statement:

Firearms Hazards
Childern in homes where guns are present are in more danger of being shot by themselves, their friends, or family members than of being injured by an intruder. It is best to keep all guns out of the home. Handguns are especually dangerous. If you choose to keep a gun, keep it uloaded and in a locked place, with the ammunition locked separately. Ask if the homes where your child visits or is cared for have guns and how they are stored.
