I do. The metro areas (Kansas City and St. Louis) and some mid-sized cities may be a no-go, but I think the rural areas where they have no school resource officer or close police response capabilities will be very open to adopting the policy. Texas has had this capability for several years, but this is a newer one for Missouri.mojo84 wrote:Knowing the area and people like you do, do you see this as a first step to more teachers and licensees being allowed to carry?
I'm hoping more and more of this will catch on and influence cultural changes elsewhere. I know our district administrators real well and they seem to be pretty resistant at this point to the idea of non-leos carrying in schools.
One thing to note, the law has not passed yet. The bill is on the Governor's desk to sign. I am hoping it passes as it has other language that removes some other restrictions like preemption of licensed open carry and reducing the CHL age to 19. The Governor is pretty pro-gun even through he is a democrat. He's the one that helped push the CHL law through back when he was the Attorney General. Missouri has always been an open carry state, but concealed carry in Missouri is less than 10 years old (2005). Open carry can be prohibited by municipalities, but concealed carry cannot. I am looking to possibly move back there in the near future and the town we will likely move to currently restricts open carry of firearms. The biggest thing Missouri has going on concealed carry is that carrying into a prohibited location is NOT a crime unless you refuse to leave, then you can be cited for trespass. It's pretty nice to realize the worst you can have happen is be told to leave if you accidentally carry into a prohibited location.
