Re: Explosion at Boston Marathon
They are now saying the detonator was devicsed using a remote controls from toy cars and was placed inside the pressure cooker along with the ball bearings, and nails. All of this was learned on the Internet.

Not necessarily. The Atlanta Olympic Park bomb was placed by Eric Rudolph who was a right wing anti-abortion protester.K.Mooneyham wrote:I would expect that a true extreme right-wing terrorist would try and blow up something governmental in nature, not a random group of folks at a sporting event like that. Blowing up random Americans just to do it seems like more of an Al Qaeda type of thing. Of course, I don't go around trying to blow folks up, so its just speculation on my part.

Re: Explosion at Boston Marathon
The pressure cooker is the container that allows the explosive to build pressure. Think of the difference with ignited black powder that is open, or powder that is rolled tightly in paper to make an M-80 or stick of dynamite. My understanding is the pressure cookers were placed in black plastic trash bags and put in the trash can. My guess is that was just a disguise.baldeagle wrote:I'm having trouble making sense of this. If your goal is to hurt as many people as possible, why put the explosives in a pressure cooker? Why put that inside a trash can? Wouldn't both containers lessen the impact of the explosion?

Re: Explosion at Boston Marathon
Someone must have had a sense of humor, because the real term is Network 'Congestion'. There are methods to do mass shutdowns, but those would be a rare case and would require a super high level officer in the company to direct it. The only way a lower level manger would direct it is to enable a block of traffic in one part of a network that is flooding the rest; kind of like putting up a dam.jimlongley wrote:Yeah, I was kind of wondering who shut it down, and how. In all of my years in the telecomm industry, the only thing that has ever accomplished a shutdown like that is a flood of traffic and that even happened back in the wireline days.VMI77 wrote:george wrote:The smartest thing they did was kill all cell phone transmissions immediately after the initial blasts.

The AP's initial report came from an anonymous law enforcement official, citing an intelligence briefing that supposedly outlined the service shutdown. The FCC later told ABC News it was not aware of any cellular shutdowns, and the news outlet confirmed the same with Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon. (T-Mobile had a similar message for VentureBeat.)
The IBM official term for it is Network Constipation. I was monitoring a network node that we had been having issues with when the message "Switch due to Network Constipation" came up on the screen. I was perplexed until I confirmed with our IBM rep that the term was indeed used, and I know it accurately described the condition.

I know one carrier did not shut down, but was monitoring from the git-go for congestion and tuning the network to make sure capacity was available as needed.VMI77 wrote:george wrote:The smartest thing they did was kill all cell phone transmissions immediately after the initial blasts.

That may prevent further triggers, but it also is a double-edged sword due to loss of cellular communicaitons for first responders.george wrote:The smartest thing they did was kill all cell phone transmissions immediately after the initial blasts.

Opinions are like belly buttons, everyone has one. Even the 'experts' can be wrong. Trust me, I have a very close tie to one and they will tell you that this type of thing is all speculation. Most of those 'experts' who are on TV are there just to get paid and will twist and turn whatever they can to make sure they get asked to come back and talk more so they can be paid again.

There are radical extremists radicals in all cultures, religions, political sectors and even small clubs and organizations. It just depends on how 'radical' they are to a movement. Let's not forget the OKC bombing was domestic. PETA and ELF are just as capable of doing things as Al Quida. I will hold any thoughts of who/what until they have more evidence or a solid suspect. Saying it has all the hallmarks of this or that now is way premature. Pipe bombs with fragmentation components are about as basic as you can get.bdickens wrote:Was Peter Bergen born that stupid, or did he have to practice?mojo84 wrote:John Nolte @NolteNC 3m

This bears all the hallmarks of Islamic terrorism. Everything from the type of explosion to the large, public event where there would be mass casualties screams "Radical Islam."
Right-wing terrorists -- if there was such a thing, which there isn't despite Big Sis' fondest wishes -- would target government facilities: Federal buildings, IRS offices and the like.
Left-wing terrorists target business interests and capitalist institutions.

Re: Explosion at Boston Marathon
The thing is we can't let these types of events prevent us from doing things we want to do. You have to weigh your options and do what you want to do. The only way to thwart these types of events is for everyone to be vigilant and to look for anything suspicious and don't be afraid to report those types of things. We will never be able to prevent this type of attack, but maybe we can alert the authorities and get people out of the way before they can do any harm to life.anygunanywhere wrote:Stay away from large crowds.
This is why I hate to fly anymore. Airports are not secure.
I will take a beat down instead of going to functions with big crowds.
I guarantee this is just the beginning of a new wave of events.
