She was caught in the side of the face and neck. It didn't blind her? Was that because she didn't take any pellets to the eyes or because they didn't penetrate and cause damage?

Just a note, this was a shotgun at point-blank (or less) range as it was 'self-inflicted'. Anything from a distance of 8-10 feet oe more will be predominately pellets and powder burns. The burglar ran half a block before collapsing. Want to bet the shotgun was loaded with birdshot? If he had been using buckshot or slugs, I don't believe Clint Eastwood's line about "blow your head clean off" is literally true, but I also doubt the guy would run half a block.
