That is kinda the situation I was in--I personally did not feel that the class I took was beneficial. More of a "if you can endure-you get the magic ticket"
I feel ok personally, because I have done the research, and studied and KNOW what I need to KNOW. But on the other hand, there were some people in the class that I feel won't have done the same things I did--and if they go strictly by what they learned in the class-they will have problems!
But, I will also admit that I have no understanding of the people who were there to renew who said that they hadn't even touched their gun "since the last renewal class" (and their shooting showed it!) Maybe it is just me--but if I am going to have it, I am going to know everything I can--and practice!
Instructors like you guys had, while maybe meeting the requirements are unfortunately part of instruction. I have over 3,500 hours of training in my company, besides college and other schools. And in all cases there are good instructors and poor. I really feel some of these instructors are part of the issue that the DPS is trying to address by laying out the course requirements more thoroughly. This attempts to force the instructors that are not adequately covering laws, safety, etc into a required amount of time for each. On the flip side, it also forces those instructors that were doing a great job of covering things to restructure their courses to meet the requirements exactly. I guess if it helps push some of the mediocre instructors into better teaching, or some of the poor instructors out, then it will be a benefit. However, there will always be those instructors that are just not good at teaching. They are monotone, boring and don't make a class fun as well as educational.
JustMe, the fact that you are here on the forum and active is an indication you take your CHL seriously and want to understand it. But, you are unfortunately some of the small minority of CHL holders who do follow through. I know many who have their license but never carry, and even those that carry but never fire their guns between renewals. Not uncommon. If it weren't for department requirements on re-qualification every 6 months or a year, then there would be many LEO's that would be the same. I know quite a few of them that have not had their duty weapon (or any gun) out since last qualification.
Bottom line, carrying a firearm is a huge responsibility, 2A rights aside, and anyone who does needs to understand the ramifications of carrying that weapon and the importance of following safety and legal rules. Anyone who takes the responsibility lightly needs to rethink their reasons for carrying.
