Re: Salvation Army will fire officer for marrying outside...

When I was a very young kid, the Salvation Army was one of the reasons I was clean, fed and sheltered.

If (at least at that time) you wanted to stay a night in one of their "transient lodges" you were required to fill out a form. I don't recall if they asked your religion. I wasn't the one filling out the form, but if they did, it certainly never mattered. They took care of all, irrespective of practically everything, except being drunk. You couldn't come in drunk and expect to stay the night.

I rarely ever interacted with actual Salvation Army people per se. Most of the time, these places were run by dry drunks. They'd come to the SA at the worst time of their lives and at least to some degree, would straighten up. They'd be given a job, perhaps driving a SA truck or cooking or maintenance, room and board at the lodge, and a small stipend. These were the folks running the so called "Sallies".

The only time you'd see Salvation Army people (for the most part) was on Sunday. And, sadly, most of the time they adopted a rather condescending attitude towards those they helped. Not that I blame them. They were helping societies incorrigibles, misfits, dead beats, daft, and a whole host of sober drunks. In other words, societies dregs.

But, help them they did and from what I can see, still do.
