I think you guys got trolled. You got lost joking about prostates, Nixon, and windshields. IMHO, he made good points about .45:
  • Lowest capacity per gun size
  • Generally larger/heavier gun
  • Over penetration tendencies
  • Other modern calibers have adequate penetration
I think he could have also mentioned that 45 is expensive and has a greater recoil. Lucky Gunner has a great ballistics test page that makes a solid case that modern ammunition can be tuned to give you any performance you want. If caliber doesn't matter, then other characteristics become more important like gun size, weight, capacity, recoil, controls, and color.

I just spent an entire day teaching two new pistol shooters. After ground school, they shot 7 very different semi-automatics ranging from .32-.45. I gave them enough instruction and experience to make their own informed decision. When it came time for them to buy, they didn't even consider the .45. Of course, they decided what most other new pistol owners do: Glock 19 (nothing great, but everything pretty good).

I like my .45. It's "second kind of cool" (just makes me happy). Objectively, I can see it's short comings tho. I have to agree with Yankee Marshal that .45 isn't the best defensive handgun round. I enjoy laughing at him when he claims to be an agent in the matrix dodging bullets.
