I have heard those same stories but I just purchased a Kimber Ultra Raptor .45 3" about a month ago and it has been 100% reliable with Hollow points and FMJ. It is unbelievable accurate! The Raptor series comes out of the Kimber Custom Shop and to be honest I don't know if that makes a difference.

Re: The 1911 plunge

I had a RIA Commander size in 10mm and really wanted to love that gun. I loved the looks and feel but it had issues. It is no longer with me as I traded it in on a Kimber Ultra Raptor in .45 ACP. I will say this the difference between that RIA and my Kimber is night and day. I now know why people will spend more money on a firearm.

I know Ruger makes an officers size version. I have smaller hands and I would carry it every now and then so that helps. 45acp or 9mm are the two calibers im looking at and while I know it's a tall order I'd like to stay in the ball park of 5-700$. I'd like to buy new so if you have any suggestions on a good one please let me know what your likes and dislikes are.
Ruger makes a commander (4.25") barrel but I don't think they have an officer size. I have the Ruger commander and love it. The commander does have a full size grip. You should be able to get one in your price range if you shop around.
