Couldn't find a better post to put this under. Looks like Senator Zaffirini has filed a bill that would change the "texting while driving" law to outlaw ham radio operation while the vehicle is in motion. This would definitely affect Skywarn storm spotters/chasers.

Re: Where to begin with a HAM radio?
And lets not forget AMSAT. A guy at our club built himself a nice rig to mount a couple HTs on with antennas he built. He was demonstrating for us and hitting South America on some Baofeng HTs.NotRPB wrote: ↑Thu Jun 21, 2018 10:29 am some radios now have the tnc built right into the radio
Well. it may be considered cheating (probably don't do it contesting), but Echolink uses VOIP voice over Internet Protocol (using a cell phone, tablet, laptop or any computer on the Internet) and connects with 2 meter 70cm repeaters worldwide.
Do any bands allow for DX (for me, over 100 miles) regardless of the solar cycle?
The other bands allowing DX via radio waves depend on propagation weather, sun, temperature inversions etc.
time of day affects it too.
Early morning I aim my TV antenna at San Antonio and Houston from Austin area, and I can tell by that whether I'll be hearing California or talking on the Brownwood Texas repeater on 2 meter via ducting... (which is rare because of hills in the way)As a reference .. to old CB radio people who worked "skip" that old CB was 11 meters if I recall correctly

Re: Where to begin with a HAM radio?
There are numerous reasons people get into the ham radio hobby;
Storm spotting/chasing
Helping with public service (ie outdoor warning siren testing, festival communications, national traffic system)
CERT
Experimentation with different home built and store bought equipment
Conversing with people on the commute to/from work
These are but a few, and there are many more.

Re: Where to begin with a HAM radio?
VE team has to mail the forms into VEC. VEC has to submit to FCC.locke_n_load wrote:Passed my tech exam today. Now to wait the 10 days or so to get into the FCC database and receive a callsign. Seems kind of ridiculous when it should take about 2 hours! Oh well.

Re: Where to begin with a HAM radio?
Congratulations! I'm running a Baofeng HT myself, I have a Yaesu in my truck and at home. I learned real quick that radios can make this a very expensive hobby if you let it.mdubtx wrote:Well, I am now as over-licensed as I can get. Passed a level 4 test tonight to upgrade to Amateur Extra.
And, I'm still running with only a Chinese HT and mag mount antenna.

Congratulations NotRPB. I've used hamstudy.org and was able to pass Tech, General, and Extra in less than 1 month.

Re: Where to begin with a HAM radio?
Congratulations on getting your license. I took my time between the exams to make sure I could pass them. I didn't feel confident in my ability to retain that much information for all 3 tests at once. Kudos to you for being able to do that! Maybe I'll hear you on the air sometime!BeeKeith wrote:After over 33 years with a company when they decided to close up and move 1/2 way across the U.S., whadda' ya' do? For me? Start the business I've been wanting to..... And for a little mental therapy, Get a ham license. Ordered Tech and General from ARRL and began studying a little at a time. Once I was sure I could pass Tech, I peaked in the General book and was a little intimidated. But with nothing to lose, I took it on like you eat an elephant, one bite at a time. When I was sure of passing General, the Extra book was ordered. Long story short, ( studying a few minutes a day for 9 months ) I went to Latourneau University in Longview and "grand slammed" it. Passed all 3 in one sitting. LETARC VE team are a great bunch of folks. That was on the 16th, the wait for the FCC posting continues. Now I need a "Go Fund Me" page started. Lol. Business is started, just not profitable yet.

Re: Where to begin with a HAM radio?
I've been having fun listening to the repeaters near me. Bought a mobile rig earlier; Yaesu FT-8900R. Need to figure out an antenna setup that'll work with my truck and the garage. I couldn't use the factory radio antenna on the truck because it kept hitting the garage door when I'd pull in and out of the garage. This should be fun.

Re: Where to begin with a HAM radio?
I took my extra on saturday as well and passed. No more of those tests needed from me. A buddy of mine from church gave me a nice HF antenna, I just need a rig to work with it. Curse you guys for getting me involved in this expensive hobby!

Today was a good day for me. Received an email giving me my license info, 7 minutes after my Baofeng BF-F8HP arrived from Amazon.
