Switzerland isn't a nation like we are. They're a confederation ("Confederatio Helvetica"), much like we were until 1865. The united States have only been "The United States" for 140 years. Did you know that the signers of the Declaration of Independence (which we celebrate on 7/4), uniformly rejected the Constitution? They were even wary of the Articles of Confederation. They feared a centralized government remote from the citizenry.
Quite prescient, those fellows. What they feared is exactly what our federal government has become.
That said, I love America, and know there is no better place on Earth. I thank God that I was born here. I'm saddened by how our founding princples have been stood on their head, and I fear what may come in the not-too-distant future.
