To make up for it, they're way too harsh on students who aren't unruly.

They give up on the bad kids, and let them do what they want. But when good kids have a bad day or a slip-up, they're on them like a ton of bricks.

"Alternative school" is self-perpetuating, and it brings in the money just like special education does. The slightest infraction --answering without raising your hand first, for instance-- resets the student's time there, and they have to serve the whole sentence over again. They usually stay there until they can quit (which is the end of the school year in which they turn 18).

Yes, "sentence". Alternative school is juvenile detention for the school day. I would never, ever allow one of my kids to fall into that trap.

When my oldest was attacked on the bus and had the nerve to protect himself instead of assuming the approved fetal position, they smacked him with 45 days in alternative school -- just like the attacker! We told them no way, and withdrew him. He finished home schooling and took his GED earlier than he would have graduated, and is now a PFC in the Army.

I don't have a high opinion of Texarkana ISD.

This has bled over from parenting. I see it every day with my niece and nephew.

They're told that if they don't cease their bad behavior, they'll receive a certain punishment. Then this punishment isn't administered.

And we wonder why they don't listen when they're told how to behave or not to behave. :???:
Reminds me of those parents who warn that they're "going to count to three!"

And so they keep warning they're going to count to three. And eventually, they start counting. "One... I told you, stop it!" "Two.... Do you want time out? I mean it!" "TWO.... I really mean it!" "TWO... I'm going to come over there!" "Two and a HALF!" . . .

etc., etc., etc.

Meanwhile, my kids have all known that if I'm counting to three, "ONE" means standing up, stripping off my belt, and starting in their general direction. Funny how I seldom made it to "two", much less "three".

My three year old says "sir" and "ma'am". He sometimes gets his manners mixed up; when he sneezes and we say "bless you!", he says, "You're welcome!" He's very Three, and will argue that he doesn't want something while arguing that he really does. But when it comes to manners, I think we've got him started on the right path. He didn't get there by coddling.
