Ganado ISD Approves Teachers To Carry Guns On Campus

GANADO, Tx (KAVU) You can add Ganado I.S.D. to the growing number of Texas school districts that's now taking security into their own hands in wake of the Sandy Hook school massacre.

On Thursday, Ganado I.S.D. board members approved a policy that would allow a limited number of teachers and staff to carry weapons on campus, making them the third school district in Texas to allow it.

Ganado I.S.D. Superintendent Jeff Black tells Newscenter 25, details of the proposal are still being worked out, but he says a limited number of staff will possess the firearms. Teachers and staff that carry the weapons, would only be on known to law enforcement and school officials.

Black says staff approved to carry the weapons will have to be approved for a concealed weapons permit, pass a psychological evaluation, and undergo hours of extensive training that would be provided by the district. Other safeguards would also be put in place to protect the district's 650 students, but would not release specifics. "This is a very reluctant step, but we wanted to give our employees a better chance of not becoming a victim, and an easy target, " Black says.

Black says the district has been considering approving the policy since 2007, when Harrold I.S.D. became the first school district to allow teachers to carry guns inside the classroom, but after the recent Sandy Hook shootings, he says it became a greater concern. "Even though we have a police department only 5 minutes away, we wanted to avoid a similar tragedy from happening here."
