I have three children (7-15 years old). They are part of the reason for my answer earlier in this thread - I carry from the time I get dressed in the morning until I crawl back into bed at night.

Actually, "safe" is probably not accurate. What I have is more of a lock box on a cable like you mention. I use one from http://www.center-of-mass.com/ and really like it. It's not going to withstand a determined attack... but it looks like it will defeat a pair of diagonal cutters and a screwdriver - so the typical smash and grab guy won't be walking away with my XD.

I put in on when I get dressed in the morning and take it off when I crawl into bed at night. It sleeps in a safe on my nightstand next to me :)

On the rare occasions where I go somewhere where carrying is prohibited, I disarm when I'm getting out of the car and put it in the safe under my seat. It goes back on my hip before I drive away.
