The prevailing attitude in Texas immediately following the Civil War, was very adversarial, and especially to occupying Union troops, and their leaders. Carpetbaggers, Reconstructionists, faced extremely hostile, attitudes, as many in Texas were among the last of those to surrendered.
I don't know if Custer was at the Alamo, but derogatory stories, about him, would have been very much expected, by Texans, at that time.
