I'd venture that they just might believe Hollywood when they show a suppressed gun making the barely audible "pewff" sound.
That's exactly what they think, why do you think they always refer to them as "Silencers" ? I still haven't understood how they can make the leap that a suppressed gun will somehow kill someone more than an un-suppressed one will. But then I don't live in the rainbow and unicorn world.
