Yeah that's been a bone of contention before, the press (or anyone else for that matter) can have access to information on anyone who file a complaint through public records act. But I don't know if there's anything we can do about it since we also want access to any other government documents. The only solution would be to include the minimal information you want available like leaving out your home phone number, listing your work address etc..
That is another reason I give a thumbs up to TexasCajun for filing the complaint and putting his information out there. :thumbs2:

I am sure that this deters many others from doing such things.

:iagree:

There is always the risk that some nut job will be able to contact you, but I too applaud TexasCajun, for not only filing the complaint, but getting as much of the message out as the media would allow. :tiphat:

Also as a point of clarification, when I spoke to the reporter, my comments referenced licensed carry, not open carry.

Yeah that is the problem with the media, they never differentiate between the two, they also like to post pictures of those who shall not be named, carrying around ARs and AKs wearing battle fatigues, and lumping them in with any discussion of open carry of handguns. It riles me that there are so many people out reporting on issues without doing their homework, and there are no recriminations. If I turned in any kind of report that was so lacking in facts at work I would be out looking for a job pretty quick. But in the media, you become an anchor man/woman.

As I figured, a 20min conversation nets a 10 second soundbite or couple of statements. The reporter did challenge my position by stating that since school students participate in the livestock show, the rodeo would be considered an educational event. I argued that since the rodeo is the sponsor of the event & not the individual schools or school groups, that rationale doesn't wash - or at the very least would require an opinion from the OAG before a prohibition could be enacted.

Then he asked me about something that someone from a 3-letter organization that we've found it necessary to distance ourselves from & not name suggested as a compromise: secured lock-boxes at the gate where carriers could store their firearms. My response was that that the law is clear - the county cannot prohibit licensed handgun carry at its facilities except under certain circumstances, so even with lock boxes (which may not be that secure given the temporary nature of the rodeo facilities) the county would still be allowing HLSR to violate the law.

On a side note, I'd like to give a shout out to the Organization that Creates Trouble for all of their "help" regarding these matters. :mad5
At least there was some dialogue on the subject, Thanks for being willing to take the time to comment. I just hope that someone somewhere becomes a test case and that fines start being imposed. there are so many municipalities that are simply thumbing their nose at the law, and feel that their agenda is more important than obeying the rules. :tiphat:

Iunnrais wrote:I'm not sure about a formal complaint but when I spoke with a committeeman Saturday, his opinion was that the rodeo could enforce whatever they wanted and if the state felt like fining the city $10k a day then it would be money well spent. This was based on the fact that alcohol was being served on-site and they had no intention of allowing guns and alcohol to mix.

I don't know where people get the idea that just because alcohol, is served or consumed, that they have cart blanch to prohibit handguns. the Ft. Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, made the decision to allow both CC and OC during their run, there was all the usual hew and cry from the media, and all of the maternal females requesting strongly for movement, claiming massive deaths resulting from all of the cowboys totin six shooters suddenly opening up on all of the children, and the pro-beer but anti gun crowd claiming massive shootouts between all of the over served folks there. The FWSSAR only prohibited carry in areas already prohibited such as the arena etc. There were no shootouts, no cattle were injured during the show from stray bullets, there was no panic in the exhibit hall, drunken armed cowboys didn't ride through the midway firing indiscriminately at people on the tilt-a-whilrl.

What did happen was they set records for attendance, set records for grand champion purchases, provided fun and entertainment for everyone who wished to attend. and showed how we can all just get along. I wish all other cities would take note, and realize that there is room for all of us.
I truly hope that all of your efforts there in the Houston area pay off, and I hope that next year there won't even be a discussion about it as ya'll walk through the gates while carrying. :tiphat:

Re: Houston Livestock Show/Rodeo to Prohibit OC

I don't live in the area so I don't know who owns the property for the Houston Stock Show and Rodeo. The arena where the rodeo is held would be a professional sporting arena already prohibited, but I know the Ft. Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, allowed OC and CC in all areas not prohibited such as the arena, and areas designated 51%. The land and Buildings are owned by the city of Ft. Worth.
