It takes about 2 seconds (at most) to extend a Sub 2000 once you have taken it out of the bag. Almost as fast as racking the slide of a pistol. I agree this is not optimal. If you are going this route, you might want to just get a Kel-Tec Sub 2000. It fits easily in a laptop case (or backpack), and is a rifle, so not restricted by 30.06 signs.
