Re: Police Academy Adventures
I don't know about PDs, but I am leery of any company that offers "comp time" instead of OT. In my experience, these places are usually so understaffed that people never get all of their time off that they were promised.nightmare69 wrote: Im going to look at all my options after my other interview Monday. The interview today was for a jailer position but I would be badged in as a deputy, that is a plus. The benefits are all paid and decent for a smaller county. The pay sucks but I guess its fair for a jailer position. 12hr shifts, 4 on and 4 off, any overtime is comp time though, I hate comp time. He asked me if Im going to work for the first department who hires me and I said yes. I cannot afford to hold out for anyone.
I don't know your personal situation, why "you cannot afford to hold out". Whatever it is, don't give that information to a potential employer.

IMO being upfront and honest is the way to go.nightmare69 wrote:Thanks guys. Last day of class is tomorrow, Friday graduation, next Tuesday TCOLE test. Assuming I pass I will be done and can finally go to work.
I got an interview tomorrow with a local SO for what I'm assuming is a jailer position. I also got a call about a temp, part time position(32hrs a week)working patrol out at a local lake working through the Sheriff dept from now till labor day. Im going to give each agency consideration but if I get the chance to jump right into badge vs work in the jail for who knows how long the choice will be easy. Part time doing the job I went to school for vs full time being a jailer. Im not going to commit to anything if they offer me a job tomorrow, Ill just respectfully tell them that I have another interview lined up that I need to consider. Thought?

See Blindref757's comment about "keyboarding".
Mr. Green has a big grin, meaning that the post is supposed to be humorous.
I am sorry that you didn't take it that way.

They no longer teach typing skills, it is called "keyboarding".texanjoker wrote:Blindref757 wrote:As an elementary school teacher...I can verify that cursive is dead. In preparing students for the future, it is critical that they leave elementary school with strong keyboarding skills. Over 85% of our written communication in the professional realm is done on a keyboard. Cursive was once deemed as critical to a person's future marketability as a productive citizen. Times have changed!
Many proactive LE agencies now require a 35 wpm typing certificate since a large portion of police work is being a mobile secretary.

You never know.ShootDontTalk wrote:I agree 100% with WildBill here. Long treatises have a tendency to come back to haunt you. Just facts presented in a cool, reasoned way usually accomplish more and keep any unneeded labels off of you.
After the class the chief could have said "There was this guy in the class scored an 85%. He must be a genius! My captain only got 50% when I taught him.

Re: Police Academy Adventures
I wasn't there so I don't know the quality of instruction, but some subjects are more difficult than others. Maybe this is why this subject is taught last.
Just because he didn't teach to pass the test doesn't mean that the instruction was not good.
Some courses are designed to make you think rather than memorize.
I suggest sticking to facts and specific examples on your review sheet rather than writing a novel.

The grammar police still are watching you.nightmare69 wrote:Ok. As long as it don't expire I'm happy.carlson1 wrote:I believe your commission ends with your employment. Remembering big words after drinking measured amounts of alcohol can be a problem for some people.nightmare69 wrote:We are doing SFST the last couple of days. Tonight we had 15 people come up and drink measured amounts of alcohol and we performed the SFST. It was fun but it's a lot to remember and we have to know it all for the test tomorrow in front of the instructor. Using the correct terminology is what I'm having most trouble with, lots of big words.

Re: Police Academy Adventures
I don't know how much leeway you will have choosing your sidearm. I like Sigs also, but I would pick a duty gun that I could shoot the best. Maybe some of the LEOs on the forum can shed some light on this topic.nightmare69 wrote:A Sig P226? No. I have put my hands on it everytime I go to a gun shop or show. Out of the 8 guns I own, 3 are Sigs so I am a fanboy. I would love to shoot one in 357 but don't know anyone who has one or a gun shop that will allow me to test drive one.WildBill wrote:Have you shot it yet?nightmare69 wrote:Here is what I want for my duty weapon, this is assuming it's ok with my future department. Sig Sauer P226 in .357 sig. I also want night sights for good reason. I can pick up one on GT distributers for $799 before any upgrades. I already have 2 9mm handguns and don't really want 3. Thought?
