Tell him to buy new food.

I am not sure what kind of lighting is used in the produce section of the grocery store, but the tomatoes look more red compared with the lighting in rest of the store.

True. It reminds me of trying to something for nothing. You get 70W for the price of 20W [but the bulb costs more!]
I have learned the hard way that temperature is possibly more important than lumens. At one point my living room looked like my reptile terrarium. I had to purchase new bulbs in the correct color range!
Very true! They should start putting the temperature on the packaging.

I tried using some "grow" lights, thinking that would be closest to sunlight, but I didn't like it.
Color temp is on all LED packages that I have seen, sometimes carefully hidden, and most CFLs. If there is no color temp on a CFL, you can assume it's in the 2700K range.
I bought some 100W[72W] halogen bulbs the other day. I just checked the packaging and on the back and in the box of "Lighting Facts" is says the Light Appearance is "warm" 3000K.
The bulbs are made by GE Hungary.

NcongruNt states:"There are lots of blogs that do very little than spout drivel from some schmoe about whatever it is he thinks is important."

Salient point and the greatest common denominator in blogging. This is what I immediately think when someone cajoles us with - "read my blog". Some schmoe begging for attention for his dopey views and inexpert opinion on whatever.

Being importuned to "read my blog" also sounds pretentious, pompous and grating...and yes, there's a small percentage out there that perform a valuable service. From what I've seen of this type, the originator isn't waving a personal flag for ego satisfaction.

WildBill discussed blogs and forums.

I see forums as distinctly different from blogs.

Forums aren't owned by the posters. It's a meeting place for a lot of give and take. It's not for ego advantage.

When I see "read my blog" on a forum, I get annoyed at the presumption. The so called blogger is riding the coattails of a web site where his inveigling isn't really appropriate, but not so egregious that many will confront him.
I agree that forums are distinctly different from blogs. Of course, there are the "look at me" blogs. There are some look at me and "see how clever I am" blogs. Some blogs appear to me to be harmless rambling or maybe a personal diary that is published for all to see. Some blogs are closer to the annoying newsletters that some people send out at Christmas time.

Other blogs may be a creative outlet for those of us who like to write. Rather that keeping our thoughts in a bound book that resides in a desk drawer, we can put them on a blog. Maybe we will get some recognition or encouragement from some dear reader. Or maybe not.

I think that with most forums, the opportunity that some one will actually read your post and respond is much greater than having a blog. There is some "ego advantage" to discussing a topic in a forum. I have been know to express my opinions so people can see how clever I am.

There are no blogs that I read on a regular basis because most people don't have enough stuff to say that can keep my interest. Blogs and bloggers can be boring and pretentious, but it's like watching TV. You can always change the channel if you don't like what's on.

Saying that a 75W bulb only uses 17 watts doesn't make sense.

I know how much light I expect to get from a 100W bulb in my lamp [enough to read a book], but don't have any idea how many lumens. ;-)
I agree but for now that is how they label and sell them. Lumens is on the package but the watts are featured center stage.

Incandescence is the emission of light from a hot body as a result of its temperature. The term derives from the Latin verb incandescere, to glow white. :tiphat:

I still have some incandescent flashlights, but all my new purchases have been LED. I have found the CREE flashlights on Meritline to be very good. They are only about $6 and use one AA battery. They are extremely bright. I haven't used the long enough to know how long a battery will last. I bought a dozen of them to give away for Christmas.

I have been switching to LEDs for years, long before they were commonly available and were relatively expensive.
The government has mandated that they will not be available for sale...but if you have'em, you can use'em. I don't really care much, but my wife does...she hates flourescents, and over the last year or so has been buying up cases of incandescents and we probably have enough stockpiled in one of my storage facilities to last us many, many years.
Yes, you can use them if you have them, but once they burn out replacing them will be next to impossible.

With reference to wiring issues and such causing problems: I was a noise trouble shooter for the phone company for years, and getting the power company to admit that they were transporting a problem, much less causing one, can be a thankless and frustrating task. At one point I had to actually train a power company engineer in noise propagation in order to convince him to even try an experiment to prove the noise in my telephone facilities was coming from the power company's plant (which, BTW, was in serious need of re-engineering and reconstruction) and after proving to him that the problem was coming from his stuff, he eventually got it fixed. A couple of months later I called him about an issue we were having in a remote valley in upstate NY, and his first response was "We do not generate or carry noise." I did not bother to try to reschool him, I just escalated over his head immediately.

There are many things that can cause noise on the power lines, and some of that noise can be very high energy even if the 240/120 60Hz is near the nominal level. Spurious frequencies from both inside the home and outside can cause all kids of issues, including electric clocks that run fast or slow, fluorescent bulbs that do not last, "ghost" bulbs (usually fluorescent) that can be seen to glow in the dark and all kinds of other stuff.

I was actually writing a book on this stuff a bunch of years ago, but a ham friend of mine beat me to the punch. Purely co-incidental, we had both noticed the need and started at about the same time, he just finished first.
What is the title of the book?

The Incandescent Light Bulb R.I.P. ?

Three of five, or 59%, of Americans say they didn't know that the top-selling 60-watt bulb — plus the 40-watt version — will start disappearing from store shelves next year, according to the sixth annual "socket survey" by lighting company Osram Sylvania.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nati ... s/3828627/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I didn't know about this until today when I heard it on the radio.

Two weeks ago one of my 100W bulbs burned out so I went to the store to buy a replacement. I was going to buy a couple spares to put in the closet, but they only had one 100W bulb on the shelf, and no 40W or 60W bulbs.
I thought it was very strange that I couldn't find "regular" light bulbs.
